Mandy Sayers to Serve as Glen Mar's Next Lead Pastor
Glen Mar’s Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) is honored to announce that the Reverend Mandy Sayers will be our Lead Pastor and begin her dedicated service on the weekend of September 8th-9th.
About 15 years ago, Glen Mar was blessed with the opportunity to witness the emergence of a very special call to pastoral ministry when Pastor Mandy worked among us as a lay minister at Glen Mar. While pursuing her Master of Divinity degree at Wesley Theological Seminary, she preached monthly and began to build a reputation of excellence in preaching and was very active in planning our varied worship services.
She obtained her degree in 2010 and was first assigned as an Associate Pastor at the Journey of Faith Church in Waldorf, Maryland. While we were saddened by her departure from Glen Mar, we knew then it was the start of a special ministry.
For the past six years she has served with distinction as Senior Pastor at Covenant UMC in Montgomery Village, MD, honing the broad gifts and skills required of Senior Pastors, especially preaching.
In presenting her to us, Bishop Easterling noted the irony in conducting a long, intense search, only to be led by God to discover the right person in plain sight. The Bishop attributed this first to God’s providence, but then to the recognition of the unique attributes of Pastor Mandy: an intense love of Jesus and pastoral service, along with her willingness to set aside all self-interest to serve God’s church.
In subsequently meeting with Pastor Mandy, the SPRC was impressed that she has indeed been fulfilling the destiny we had seen in her. She clearly expressed the source of her conviction in a letter to the SPRC, but meant for all of us:
I am proud to say that Glen Mar has been an important part of my development as a Christian and as a pastor.
While I am grateful for all the ways that Glen Mar has blessed us (and the world) in the past, I’m excited to discover who Glen Mar is today and to do my part as Lead Pastor to help Glen Mar move into its future. I am very aware that God has been at work here since I left, and that it is not the same church it was then. That is a good thing, because the Holy Spirit is always shaping and nudging us in new ways and in new directions for the sake of the world. I am excited to listen well and to discover how God is already moving at Glen Mar. I see this appointment as a “new beginning” in our relationship. I come with no agenda other than to listen well, love the people and the church, and help the church take the next faithful steps on our shared journey as followers of Jesus. I bring strong and effective preaching gifts that have helped the churches I have led to grow and thrive. I am an exhorter, an encourager, and someone who is not afraid to face challenges or to seek help from others. Ministry is not “my work”- it is “our work”.
Glen Mar is Grateful to Pastor Rod
The SPRC is also very pleased to announce that Pastor Rod Miller and his wife Carol plan to continue to worship at Glen Mar and join a wonderful cadre of retired Pastors with which we are richly blessed. Pastor Rod has been our interim pastor but has never been just a “placeholder.” He has aggressively addressed every challenge, identified some new ones, maintained our momentum, and generously instilled his love of the Lord. In addition, he will continue to co-lead our discussions around The United Methodist Church’s “Way Forward.” Thank you, Pastor Rod!
