Glen Mar participates in a variety of local outreach ministries here in Howard County. Most of these opportunities allow whole families can participate and only require a few hours of your time. Check out the list below to see how you can get involved.

Angels for a Cure Relay for Life Team
"Angels for a Cure" is Glen Mar's Relay for Life team. The team will participate in the Relay for Life of Catonsville to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and to support cancer survivors. Learn more.
Bridges to Housing Stability (prevention of homelessness)
Bridges to Housing Stability consists of a transitional housing program, along with programs that focus on the prevention of family homelessness. It is located in Columbia, MD. Glen Mar supports Bridges to Housing Stability as a Community Partner through direct monetary contributions and by participating in the annual Chili Cook-Off. In addition, individuals from Glen Mar serve on the Board and provide volunteer support.

Food Collection Ministry
Glen Mar organizes quarterly food collections for various food pantries (separate from our ongoing collection for Grassroots). Organizations served thus far include:
- The Eva Johnson Foundation (EJF): a non-profit foundation that assists the residents of Hilltop and Ellicott Terrace in Ellicott City by providing food during emergency situations.
- Salvation Army in Ellicott City (formerly Christian Services of Howard County)
- Ames Memorial United Methodist Church's food pantry and soup kitchen in Baltimore city, available to residents by referral from Department of Social Services (DSS).
- Hurley Community Development, Inc., a non-profit that operates a monthly food distribution program in Hurley, VA, site of our annual youth mission trips
- Howard County Food Bank, operated by the Howard County Community Action Council (CAC).
Grassroots Homeless Shelter Ministries
Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center is Howard County's homeless shelter and 24-hour crisis intervention center. Glen Mar provides direct monetary contributions to Grassroots, and provides a coordinator and support to volunteers for several ministries involving Grassroots. These include the Cold Weather Shelter, the Grassroots Donations Ministry, Meals for Grassroots Ministry, the Day Resource Center Ministry, the annual Soup 'r Sundae Event, and the annual Glen Mar Golf Tournament and Silent Auction. HEHHC (Help End Homelessness in Howard County)
HEHHC, Inc. provides below-market-rate housing for families who are either homeless or face the prospect of homelessness with market-rate housing. They accomplish this by purchasing suitable dwellings and leasing them as permanent housing at 30% of household income. Glen Mar is one of several churches that has partnered with HEHHC to help them with their mission, and to provide skills and resources to residents. Sleep in Heavenly Peace Howard County (SHP)
As part of the 2019 Glen Mar Day of Service, we partnered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build bunk beds for needy children in Howard County. This was the beginning of an ongoing ministry with SHP. Our initial plan is to have 3 additional builds this year. Contact Dan Kagey, email@example.com, for more information on our partnership with SHP. The Thrift Shop, now run by Salvation Army, has a long history of helping people in need in Howard County by ministering to them in Christ's name. Donations of lightly used clothing, furniture, appliances and toys are accepted and sold in its Thrift Shop at a nominal charge. The money is used to assist low income persons/families with loans or grants. A food pantry is open during store hours. The Thrift Shop is located at 3267 Pine Orchard Lane, Ellicott City, MD, 21043. In addition to providing volunteers, Glen Mar supports the ministry through direct monetary contributions.
Volunteer or Learn More: Glen Mar provides volunteers to work in the Thrift Shop on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and 2nd and 4th Saturdays. Volunteers sort donations, price items, run items to the sales floor, etc. Youth must sign up in advance by contacting our liaison, Beth Kagey at 410.740.8129. Adult volunteers can show up at the front entrance between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and tell the cashier you are there to work. You will be directed to the back to see what help is needed. There will be a short on-the-job training. Volunteers are also needed to make furniture deliveries on the second Saturday of the month.
