Glen Mar has several outreach ministries which directly benefit Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, Howard County's only homeless shelter. These ministries include the Cold Weather Shelter, the Grassroots Donations Ministry, Meals for Grassroots Ministry, the Rt. 1 Day Center Ministry, and the annual Glen Mar Golf Classic and Silent Auction. See details below for each of the ministries.

Cold Weather Shelter (Homeless Shelter Overflow)
Glen Mar takes a turn providing overflow housing for the homeless, one to two weeks each winter.  Learn more.
Grassroots Donations (Food Collection)
Glen Mar has an ongoing collection of food and supplies to meet the immediate needs of Grassroots' Family Shelter and Rt. 1 Day Resource Center.

To find out what items we are collecting for any given month, please download our Immediate Needs List, or take a printed wallet-sized Immediate Needs List from the Welcome Center. A longer list of ongoing needs is also available at the Grassroots websites: Family Shelter Ongoing Needs List, Day Center Ongoing Needs List. Target gift cards are welcome and can be purchased through Glen Mar's Gift Card program. Please place donations in the large, green collection bin on the lower level.

Grassroots Meals (Meatloaf Dinner)

Grassroots Main Building

Glen Mar provides dinner on the 4th Tuesday of each month to the residents staying at Grassroots' homeless shelter, located at 6700 Freetown Road in Columbia, MD, 21044.  View map.

Glen Mar provides the dinner entree (meatloaf) and milk for all residents, currently 55-60 people. We typically split the task among four volunteers, with each volunteer dropping off two prepared meatloaves and 1 gallon of milk. Occasionally, a small group or scout troop will pick a date and provide everything needed as a service project.

Drop off is any time that day prior to 5 p.m. (3 p.m. if the meatloaves need to be re-heated). Total commitment time each month is about 3 hours, including shopping, preparing the meatloaves and dropping the food and milk off. Volunteers can sign up for one time, every month, or anything in between.

This is a great service project for Confirmands and their Friend in Faith or parents, or for families.
