Glen Mar's Wish Upon a Star Ministry is an annual program that provides Christmas gifts and donations of gift certificates for clothing, shoes and food to families in need living in our area. The families remain anonymous to Glen Mar, but have gone through the selection process of the agencies we work with. Sign ups and collections of new donated items take place in November through the beginning of December in the Gathering Place on Sundays between services.
This mission was started over 25 years ago. We, here at Glen Mar, are truly blessed with many resources. Our continued commitment to reach out and help those in need is a blessing for each of us.
Wish Upon a Star 2018
We will assist approximately 30 families with clothing, food, and toys. We are working with Ames Memorial United Methodist Church, the Eva Johnson Foundation, the Judy Center of Howard County, the Howard County Public School System, and UMC Board of Child Care, and HopeWorks of Howard County. We will also provide gift cards for families identified by the Grassroots Homeless Shelter as well as for soldiers stationed at Ft. Meade who will not be able to be with their families over the holidays.
We have “stars” (i.e. individual gift requests) available for selection before and after all Saturday and Sunday church services in November. We are also very happy to accept monetary donations, as we provide grocery gift cards to our families. Checks should be made payable to Glen Mar UMC with Wish Upon a Star in the memo section. All items must be new and unwrapped. Return all gifts with the stars taped or stapled to the outside of the bag for identification. All stars with gifts and checks should be returned to The Gathering Place no later than noon on Sunday, Dec. 2.
