Social Justice Group

Connect

By Pastor Melaina Trice

Our baptismal vows of renouncing the spiritual forces of wickedness, resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves, confession that Jesus Christ is Lord, and trusting in his grace in union with the church, call us to social justice.

This past Pentecost, we wore orange to honor those that had been affected by gun violence while we remembered the tragedies of the mass shootings that took place at in Uvalde, Buffalo, and Tulsa.  The color orange was a part of an entire weekend of gun violence awareness for the “Wear Orange Weekend.”

Many people in Glen Mar both wanted to honor their baptismal vows and channel their feelings of empathy, grief, and anger into prayer and action.  The Social Justice Group was formed in response.  Initially, the group came together to have a safe space to support one another through the pain and grief of the many social ills in need of address.  The group found a safe space to lament, learn, and plan for action.

The Social Justice Group meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month (except December) at 7:00 pm.  Gun Violence Prevention is the focus of education and action this calendar year.  This group will educate itself on the many other social justice issues to be addressed in our community and discern how to effectively engage and take action while continuing to address gun violence prevention.  All are welcome to attend this group.

On Thursday, September 22 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., some members of the Social Justice Group will attend a march/rally at the US Capital to urge the senate to ban assault weapons. Wear your Glen Mar shirt and join them at the march/rally.  For more information, please contact Pastor Melaina Trice.
