Glen Mar participates in a variety of local outreach ministries here in Howard County. Most of these opportunities allow whole families can participate and only require a few hours of your time. Check out the list below to see how you can get involved.

Angels for a Cure Relay for Life Team

"Angels for a Cure" is Glen Mar's Relay for Life team. The team will participate in the Relay for Life of Catonsville to raise funds for the American Cancer Society and to support cancer survivors. Learn more.

Bridges to Housing Stability (prevention of homelessness)

Bridges to Housing Stability, Inc. focuses on solving homelessness and housing instability with affordable housing solutions in Howard County. Bridges has been rooted in Howard County since 1990. Glen Mar Church is a long-time supporter of Bridges’ work through monetary operations support, participating in the annual Chili Cook-Off and Christmas in July gift card donation program. Individual members from Glen Mar volunteer in the office with the organization, help with turnover of rental units, and assist Bridges annually with MLK Jr. Day of Service projects.

Food Collection Ministry

Glen Mar organizes quarterly food collections for various food pantries (separate from our ongoing collection for Grassroots). Organizations served thus far include:

  • The Eva Johnson Foundation (EJF): a non-profit foundation that assists the residents of Hilltop and Ellicott Terrace in Ellicott City by providing food during emergency situations.
  • Salvation Army in Ellicott City (formerly Christian Services of Howard County)
  • Ames Memorial United Methodist Church's food pantry and soup kitchen in Baltimore city, available to residents by referral from Department of Social Services (DSS).
  • Hurley Community Development, Inc., a non-profit that operates a monthly food distribution program in Hurley, VA, site of our annual youth mission trips
  • Howard County Food Bank, operated by the Howard County Community Action Council (CAC).

Grassroots Homeless Shelter Ministries

Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center is Howard County's homeless shelter and 24-hour crisis intervention center. Glen Mar provides direct monetary contributions to Grassroots, and provides a coordinator and support to volunteers for several ministries involving Grassroots. These include the Cold Weather Shelter, the Grassroots Donations Ministry, Meals for Grassroots Ministry, the Day Resource Center Ministry, the annual Soup 'r Sundae Event, and the annual Glen Mar Golf Tournament and Silent Auction. Volunteers are needed for each of these ministries. HEHHC (Help End Homelessness in Howard County)

HEHHC, Inc. provides below-market-rate housing for families who are either homeless or face the prospect of homelessness with market-rate housing. They accomplish this by purchasing suitable dwellings and leasing them as permanent housing at 30% of household income. Glen Mar is one of several churches that has partnered with HEHHC to help them with their mission, and to provide skills and resources to residents. Operation Christmas Child

Help gather supplies for shoebox Christmas gifts for children around the world as part of Samaritan Purse's Operation Christmas Child ministry. Donate items for boxes, pack boxes at Glen Mar, and/or volunteer at the regional processing center. Contact: Eloise Labram, occ@glenmarumc.org. Sleep in Heavenly Peace Ministry

Our Sleep in Heavenly Peace ministry is a partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace - Howard County, a non-profit organization that builds bunk beds for needy children in Howard County. Learn more.

Thrift Shop

Now run by the Salvation Army. Open Tuesdays & Thursdays and the 2nd & 4th Saturday of each month. Glen Mar supports this work financially and by providing volunteers.

Adult volunteers can show up at the front entrance between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and tell the cashier you are there to work. You will be directed to the back to see what help is needed. There will be a short on-the-job training. Volunteers are also needed to make furniture deliveries on the second Saturday of the month.
