Glen Mar's Wish Upon a Star Ministry is an annual program that provides Christmas gifts and donations of gift certificates for clothing, shoes and food to families in need living in our area. The families remain anonymous to Glen Mar, but have gone through the selection process of the agencies with whom we work. Sign ups and collection of gifts take place from early November through early December.
This mission was started over 30 years ago. We, here at Glen Mar, are truly blessed with many resources. Our continued commitment to reach out and help those in need is a blessing for each of us.
Wish Upon a Star 2020 Recap
For Wish Upon a Star 2020, we assisted 29 families and 10 youth with new clothing and toys as well as gift cards to local food stores. The families/youth were identified by Ames Memorial United Methodist Church, Eva Johnson Foundation, the Howard County Public School System, and the Baltimore Campus of the Board of Child Care of the United Methodist Church. We also provided gift cards for families identified by the Judy Center of Howard County, HopeWorks and the Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center.
Stars designating various needs for donors to fulfill were not available to the Glen Mar congregation in 2020 as they have been in the past because few people could pick up the stars during in-person worship services due to coronavirus pandemic attendance restrictions. Instead, people signed up online to donate items and checks and delivered the items in the church’s parking lot during designated times in early December. A Glen Mar committee distributed the gifts to the various organizations that identified the needs, and those organizations delivered the gifts to families and youth.
Thank you to all who participated in this ministry! Information about the 2021 Wish Upon A Star ministry will be available late fall.
