Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’

As we reflect on the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we are invited to discover the joy and purpose that comes from serving together. Join us for the 13th Annual MLK Jr. Day of Service, a joyful community-wide celebration. Registration opens in December.

Hosted by Glen Mar Church in partnership with Ames Memorial UMC and St. John Baptist Church, this day welcomes everyone: individuals, families, neighbors, friends, and community groups. Choose from two dozen meaningful, hands-on service opportunities designed for grandparents, parents, young adults, teens, and children. As you serve alongside others, take time to ask, “What brought you here today?” and share your own story of why serving matters to you.

The event is FREE and open to the public. A complimentary chili lunch will be served, and student service hours are available. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Register for the morning session (8:30 am – 12:30 pm), the afternoon session (12:30 – 4:30 pm), the full day, or an off-site activity. Come for an hour or stay for the day.

What to Expect

This year’s on-site activities include hands-on projects like:

• packaging meals
• sewing pillowcases for sick children
• making no-sew fleece hats and blankets
• decorating cookies
• creating inspirational artwork
• knitting and crocheting for others
• writing letters to seniors
• Barbie and Ken doll restoration
• assembling fishing kits
• collecting non-perishable food and gently used clothing

Planned off-site activities (pre-registration required) include:

• making bunk beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace
• cleaning and organizing at Home of Our Own
• volunteering at Paul’s Place and Manna House

Every project you participate in helps make our community stronger, more compassionate, and more united—just as Dr. King envisioned.
