Message From Pastor Mandy

The Messenger
advent, Christmas, Jesus, The Messenger 2021-11-01

Dear Glen Mar Friends,
I was reading a meme on Facebook the other day that said, “If they think the ‘supply chain’ can keep Christmas from coming, they must not know much about the true meaning of Christmas.” Amen to that! As Advent approaches, I’m reminded again this year about the gift of a Savior, Jesus Christ, who comes to us in seasons when we need him the most.  We celebrate his coming to us, his birth, not in the long easy days of summer, but in the cold, dark, time of the year. A time when we need light more than ever.  And this year, as like last year, it seems we need the Light of the World more than ever too.

Growth Groups, small groups, The Messenger 2021-11-01

By Pastor Heerak Kim
Time to time, the difficulty of ministry has affected my emotional and mental wellness. I was anxious due to a conflict in my previous appointment, so I called one of my small group friends and talked it out. His listening ears and empathetic presence calmed me down. My small group continued to check in with me and make sure I was okay. When I encounter difficulties in life, I still seek help from my small group. I talk things out and alleviate my anxiety. My small group is there to listen, pray with me, and hold me up. The attitude of seeking help itself makes a huge difference when I am confined in my negative thoughts and feelings. My small group makes it possible because there is trust and love. We meet as often as we can. We become like a family. We share joyful moments of our lives as well as struggles. We help and encourage each other in any way possible.

As a result of the first event, 19 of our neighbors received either their first or second Pfizer vaccinations. At the second event, people had the opportunity to receive their first dose, second dose, or a booster shot of the Pfizer vaccine.

Pastor's Ponderings
All Saint's Day, Halloween, journey to bethlehem

Dear Glen Mar friends,
Halloween is coming! You may not think of it as a particularly religious holiday and if it’s not your thing, I respect that. But I learned in seminary about where Halloween came from. I was reminded that the period between Halloween and the winter solstice in late December coincided then, as it does today, with the darkest time of the year, with shorter days and longer nights. (At least in our hemisphere). In the medieval period, dark was pretty dark, apparently, and it was a dangerous time. In our “Edison-ized” society, where light is taken for granted, we tend to forget that. But long cold nights meant for dangerous travel back then. People were eating the food they had stored since the crops were all harvested and the land was covered with ice. It was a risky and vulnerable time of year.
At this darkest time, the Church gathered its “little lights” together, its saints, for help through this “long dark night of the soul.” November 1 became All Saint’s Day, a time to honor those gone on to glory and to remind us that Jesus has won the victory over all the darkness that can surround us.
