Meal Delivery: 4th Tuesday Each Month
Grassroots is the only general emergency shelter in Howard County. It serves families and single adult women at 6700 Freetown Road in Columbia, MD. Grassroots provides three meals daily for their shelter residents from their on-site commercial kitchen. They rely heavily on community support to accomplish this. Glen Mar volunteers have been supporting Grassroots and “Serving the World” by preparing and delivering a dinner entrée on the 4th Tuesday of each month for over 15 years.
Volunteers provide a meatloaf entree and milk for up to 50 residents staying at the shelter. Five volunteers prepare two meatloaves in his or her own home, or buys the equivalent of two meatloaves, and takes them to the shelter on 6700 Freetown Road in Columbia. One volunteer purchases five gallons of milk and delivers them to the shelter. We do not stay and serve the meal.
Dinner is served from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Drop off can be any time that day prior to 3:00 p.m. If meatloaves are hot, they can be delivered at 3:00 p.m. or after because Grassroots personnel can keep them hot on a steam table. If they are delivered much earlier, it would be best that they were delivered chilled, to be re-heated for 5:00 p.m. dinner. Milk can be delivered at any time Tuesday or the day before.
Total commitment time each month is about 3 hours, including shopping, preparing the meatloaves and dropping the food and milk off. Volunteers can sign up for one time, for every month, or anything in between.
To sign up to make a meatloaf, please contact our ministry coordinator, Linda Hunt.
In addition to our monthly contribution, you might also consider providing a dinner separately as a great service project for a group or scout troop or as a family. Menu suggestions are available on Grassroots website. The link to their SignUp is on this page.
