If you missed the first event in Glen Mar’s 2024 Summer Concert Series – the Monumental Brass Quintet’s fantastic performance on May 31 – all is not lost. Three outstanding free one-hour concerts are still on the 2024 schedule.
Concert with Extra Perks
On Friday, June 21 at 7:00 p.m., the Ken & Brad Kolodner Quartet will bring a unique spin to old music by weaving the hammered dulcimer and clawhammer sounds together to make American folk music. The quartet will play traditional and original music at this free event held outside of Glen Mar (inside if it rains). Bring lawn chairs and blankets. A hot dog bar and beverages will be available starting at 5:00 p.m. Suggested donation is $10. The suggested donation for a children’s option is $5.
Ken is one of the most influential hammered dulcimer players and old-time fiddlers in North America. His son Brad is a renowned clawhammer banjo player. Ken and Brad will be joined by bassist Alex Lacquement, who has crafted a unique, dazzling style, and by fiddler and guitarist Rachel Eddy, a dynamic multi-instrumentalist.
After the concert, the musicians will hold an old-time jam. All are welcome to play fiddle tunes and old-time songs. Bring your instruments.
Patriotism Reigns
On Friday, July 19 at 7:00 p.m., The Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band will present “America the Beautiful,” a musical celebration of our beloved nation. Travel across breathtaking natural landscapes and meet the warm and hospitable people who are the fabric of the United States of America at this free concert in Glen Mar’s Spirit Center. Through exciting music and stunning visuals, be inspired by the beauty and diversity of this great nation while honoring the veterans who answered the call to defend it.
Have a Blast
On Friday, Aug. 16 at 7:00 p.m., the Quey Percussion Duo will dazzle audiences by blending traditions of contemporary, cross-cultural, classical, and popular music at this free event in Glen Mar’s Spirit Center. Quey members Dr. Gene Koshinski and Dr. Tim Broscious elevate the acts of striking, shaking, and scraping into a blast of energy.
Monumental Concert
To the delight of the 160 people attending, the Monumental Brass Quintet concert kicked off Glen Mar’s 2024 Summer Concert Series in the Spirit Center May 31. The performers were John Banther (tuba), Heidi Brown (horn), Gregory Freeman (trombone), guest musician Jose Oviedo (trumpet), and Patrick Whitehead (also on trumpet). These superb musicians played a variety of pieces – classical, jazz, hymns, and marches – while also presenting background information on the songs.
“It was a wonderful way to spend an evening,” praised Halethorpe resident Jo Ann Barsda.
Series 2024 Supporters
Concerts in this series are free thanks to community support. In 2024, this support came from a Howard County Arts Council $5,500 grant, Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home’s sponsorship, and two generous contributors, “Friends of the Music Program at Glen Mar Church” and a donation made in memory of Karen Angle.
