Pastor’s Ponderings – Lent: Start, Stop, Keep Edition

Pastor’s Ponderings

Greetings Glen Mar,

Yesterday was Palm/Passion Sunday, and it also marked the conclusion of our Sermon Series, “The Desert Mothers and Fathers.” I hope you received something meaningful from the wisdom and lessons of these faithful siblings over the last several weeks, and that you know the desert was never designed to be the destination.

The destination is drawing closer to Christ. The Desert Mothers and Fathers were a means to draw us closer to the One in whom all things are found.

Still, what can you take from this journey through the desert? On every journey we take in life, there is always something to take home with us. This idea made me think back to my corporate days and a simple framework: start, stop, keep.

This concept resonates with me at the end of Lent. We might ask ourselves, “Based on what I learned this Lent, what will I start doing at its conclusion?” What might you start doing based on the lessons you have learned? Next, you might ask, “What do I need to stop doing?” Perhaps God has revealed something that you need to refrain from doing at the end of this 40-day journey because it’s not helpful, or even harmful. Finally, you may ask, “What can I keep doing even after Lent has ended?” What spiritual practices or disciplines has God used to ignite a spark in your heart that you want to continue? If it brings you joy and draws you closer to God, keep it going!

Even though Lent is concluding, and in a sense we have “arrived,” don’t be afraid to start, stop, or keep something from Lent that has shaped you and helped you draw closer to God. While Lent is just a season, discipleship to Christ is a lifetime. Start, stop, and keep something that will serve you along the way.

Be led by the Spirit and know that God’s grace abounds! Happy Holy Week!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Chris
