Pastor’s Ponderings – With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

Pastor’s Ponderings

When I was a kid, I loved Spider-Man! You know the story: Peter Parker was an ordinary, awkward teenager who suddenly found himself with extraordinary powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. At first, he used that power for himself, trying to make money as a professional wrestler. But everything changed in a moment when he chose not to stop a thief who was running away. He let the thief go, only to discover later that the same man went on to kill his father figure, Uncle Ben. Uncle Ben had given Peter advice earlier, telling him, “With great power comes great responsibility.” The line echoed in Peter’s mind after the murder, and it still reverberates in my own because it names something true about our life in Christ.

In 1 Peter 1, the apostle Peter is writing to Christians who are trying to figure out how to live in a difficult and uncertain world. He first reminds them who they are. They are exiles, citizens of God’s kingdom, we talked about this last week; they have been given a living hope through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Their trials are real, but they are not forever. Only after grounding them in their true identity does Peter turn to how they are to live.

The call is to live in holiness. Holiness is difficult, but it’s not unattainable. It is merely a life shaped by God. Peter reminds them that they were not ransomed (set free through payment) with temporary things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ. Their lives now belong to God, and their hope is to be set not on what is temporary, but on what is eternal. Even in the middle of trials, they are invited to trust God and live differently because of what He has done.

What does that look like in practice? Peter says it plainly: “love one another deeply from the heart.” The power we have been given to love is not for ourselves, but for others. Through the Holy Spirit, God is present in us, calling us to obey Him by loving one another. Our freedom in Christ is not just freedom from sin, but freedom to live differently, to serve, to care, and to show genuine love in real and practical ways for one another.

We have been given a great gift, and with it comes a real responsibility. Not out of guilt, but as a response to grace. In a world where it is easy to turn inward, to only do what we want to do for ourselves, we are called to keep doing good, to encourage one another, and to love deeply. What we do with what we have been given matters more than we might realize.

Spider-Man teaches us that yes, as followers of Christ, we do have a great power that we have been gifted in God’s very own presence with us, the Holy Spirit in us. With this great power, we also have a tremendous responsibility. Use it wisely, friends.

In Christ,

Pastor Chris
