On May 26, 2024, Glen Mar youth participated in building beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace. This organization helps kids in Howard County who need a bed, so they don’t have to sleep on the floor. Coming into the building we weren’t expecting to see many people in attendance, but to our surprise there was a whole community there ready and eager to help – 62 Glen Mar youth and adults.

Throughout the day we were both asked to do many different tasks. First, we were asked to sand the boards that would be used to make the bed frame, even though we were not particularly excited to sand pieces of wood. We both knew it would help towards an amazing cause.

Next, we got to screw pieces of wood together to start the process of building the bed frame. This was fun to do as we did it with friends. It helped us understand more of the process of building beds. The next thing we were asked to do was burn the logo of Sleep in Heavenly Peace onto the foot-boards. We enjoyed this part because we got to take the branding iron out of a firepit and burn it into the footboards. The final thing we were asked to do was to stain the heads and backboards of the beds. We did this for a while because it was a two-person task, and we ended up being really good at it. There were other jobs we never got to do because we had so many volunteers working on the tasks.

By the end of the day everyone collectively made 10 whole beds! It was a really great experience as we learned so much and we are so thankful that we got to help so many people. We are also grateful to the entire Glen Mar community who made it possible for us to do the build by helping us generate the necessary funds through the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser.

Your youth peeps,

Leah Sellers and Abby Roch
