Eat Chili, Fight Homelessness

Pastor's Ponderings
bridges to housing stability, chili cookoff

Dear Glen Mar,

One of the first events I went to as your lead pastor was the Bridges for Housing Stability “Hotter Than Thou” Chili Cookoff. It benefits Bridges, a great partner organization that works with Howard County families to ensure they can not only have housing but have it in a sustainable long-term way.

The event was amazing—congregations of all faiths and flavors had set up pots of chili that they had made, and we got to walk around and “vote” for our favorite chili (after having tasted them all very thoroughly, of course). Glen Mar won the contest that year, the “Golden Ladle” trophy, but more importantly, a great cause was supported, to care for our neighbors. They also had a great silent auction.

This year, the event will be virtual, and I’m hoping we can all participate! Glen Mar UMC is a participating and sponsoring congregation. Chili will be provided by Bare Bones so you know it will be delicious, though not quite as good as our own George D.!

You can support Bridges and our congregation’s efforts by:

This Sunday, I’ll have my chili ordered already (one of each kind), and be preaching on a tough passage from Mark (aren’t they all), about being a stepping stone, not a stumbling block. I hope you’ll join us in person or online.
