Lessons from Ron

Pastor's Ponderings
Ron Stevens, worship

Dear Glen Mar,

I wanted to share with you that our beloved Ron Stevens has passed away following a battle with cancer. His service celebrating his life will be on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 10 am at Haight Funeral Home on Rt. 32, with burial following at Lake View Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Monday, Oct. 11 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at the funeral home.

I also wanted to share with you that I have long been humbled by Ron’s deep faith and his heart for discipleship and service. He was always asking what more he could do to help, and always reminding us that we are “blessed to be a blessing.” He gave sacrificially of his time, talents and treasures with a cheerful heart because as he told me, “It’s all God’s in the end, and we are only stewards of God’s stuff. Are we doing all we can? Are we giving all we can?”

In this way, Ron reminds me of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, who admonished us to “Earn all you can (without hurting your neighbor), Save all you can, and give all you can…” and “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”

Even as he faced this last recurrence of cancer, Ron’s faith was strong. He told me that this was for him a time where he felt God’s provision more strongly than ever. He said, “I wake up and I feel God’s presence. I have a lot of time to pray and to talk to and to listen to God. And in the end, whatever comes next, I don’t know the details…but I know it will be good. Because God will be with me. And God is good. And in the end, what matters most is love.”

I guess you could say I’m giving this Pastor’s Ponderings to Ron to be your guest writer today. He’s a disciple of our Lord who stored up so many treasures in heaven and got a lot of things right when it comes to what matters on earth.

Please pray for his wife Jane and his family…and if you want to know the Jesus Ron knew, join us for worship, where we will learn more about how to follow Jesus and what it means to “let go” of the things that weigh us down.

See you in Church!

Pastor Mandy
