Curious about how Glen Mar came to be? Here’s a brief timeline!
- 1953: Dr Norman Trott, District Superintendent of the Baltimore South District of the Baltimore Annual Conference of the Methodist Church explored Howard County looking for church sites. He met with Reverend Arthur Hunter and Ralph Smith who offered two and one-half acres located on the corner of Glen Mar Road and Route 175.
- July 18, 1954: Fifty-six persons attended the first service of Glen Mar on in the Ellicott City Junior High School, thus Glen Mar was formed as a mission church of the Methodist Church, with Reverend Alvin Perkins as the first pastor. Following meetings in the home of Morris and Mildred Smith and the junior high school, the congregation finished its first building constructed of brown Indiana limestone at a total cost of $60,000 including land.
- January 23, 1955: Glen Mar held its first service with seventy persons in attendance.
- March 20, 1955: Service of Consecration and Corner Stone Laying where five hundred persons attended!
- 1957 Reverand W.B. Hoffhines appointed to Glen Mar. He was the first minister to occupy the new parsonage, which had been purchased in March 1957 for $17,500.
- 1964: Education Building developed enabling room for growing Sunday School, Cub Scout Pack, Preschool, even Head Start, Bible Study Fellowship, and the Speech and Hearing Agency.
- January 1, 1979: The Reverend Anders Lunt was assigned to the congregation.
- 1980’s: Establishment of a second worship service, development of bible studies and outreach ministries.
- 1989: a new sanctuary seating three hundred and fifty people built.
- 1990’s: A mission emphasis begun by Pastor Willie Armstrong expands. Today, both adults and youth from Glen Mar have participated in service in Haiti, Russia, Uganda, Mexico, Bahamas, and the United States. This emphasis on mission is a strong pillar of the service opportunities available at Glen Mar. In addition, pastoral care ministries becomes an increased focus inspiring the beginning of Stephen Ministry.
- 1991: Glen Mar joined with Alberta Gary Memorial United Methodist Church located on Guilford Road.
- 1996: Facilities Taam was formed to examine the ministries and use of Glen Mar facilities, and by 1998 determined it was time to relocate.
- March 2000: With the support of the Baugher family, Glen Mar acquired current location.
- mid 2001: Over one-hundred and fifty individuals from ministry teams representing Glen Mar bein the needs assessment and design work that was approved by at the Charge/Church Conference in January 2002.
- 2003: Relocation Team transitions to Building Team who took the initial design into development and implementation.
- 2008: Glen Mar opens doors on New Cut Road!
