Pastor’s Ponderings – Go for the Bronze

Pastor's Ponderings

Dear Glen Mar friends,

I miss the Olympics already! Did you know that studies have shown that the winner of the bronze medal is statistically happier over time than the winner of the silver medal? The Silver Medal Winner thinks in terms of having “lost the gold medal.” The Bronze Medal Winner is happy to have “won a medal” or “made the podium.” Silver medalists feel envy—bronze medalists feel grateful.

As we prepare for the start of school here in Howard County (and teachers return as I’m writing this!), I wanted to just write a note about the dangers of perfectionism and comparison. Following Jesus definitely means “giving our best,” but it also means having an attitude of humility and service and gratitude. Sometimes our winning the bronze medal means God can get the gold one, if you know what I mean.

I’ve often shared of late the note that Eric carried in his wallet for years. It was a simple card that just said, “I’m third.” He got it in his high school youth group as part of an activity/lesson. It’s a reminder that God is first in our lives, and we are called to care for our neighbors, and then, for ourselves. Sometimes “winning the bronze” in a given situation—letting your spouse win the argument, doing the generous thing, doing the humble thing, is the key to real victory.

Join us this week in worship to talk about the Parable of the Talents (speaking of gold), and to welcome our new Pastor for Congregational Care—Pastor Gayle.

See you in church,

Pastor Mandy
