Dear Glen Mar friends,
This week, I’m thinking about baseball, and the great Brooks Robinson, who went to be with the Lord recently. Surely Brooks was among the best to play the position known as “hot corner” — 3rd base — and I suspect was a hero of O’s fans of his era.
What I like about Brooks, and any great infielder, is the ability to be ready and to be flexible. I read this week that someone asked how he could be so prepared for any ball hit his way. He apparently said something like, “While the pitcher is winding up, I’m already moving toward home plate, so when the ball is struck, I’m already in motion.”
Sometimes I think our Christian life is like that — that the practices of Christian living ensure we are “already in motion” so when storms come or God calls us to act, we are ready. Worship, prayer, study, service, generous giving… all these practices help us to be “in motion” as followers of Jesus, ready to grow, love and serve as Jesus needs us to do.
I hope this week we’ll serve with knees bent, on the balls of our feet, ready to move in love, forgiveness, and flexibility toward God and neighbor. I think Brooks would be proud.
This Sunday, we will have World Communion, and talk about what we can learn about forgiveness from the brave adventure of marriage. Did you know all those scriptures people read at weddings were written for everyone, not just married people? Come if you are single, married, divorced, widowed, or “It’s complicated.” You’re in for a blessing.
We’ll also have the chance for second mile giving toward our capital fund, as we will on each Communion Sunday. Thank you for all you do, in every way, as part of the Lord’s Team at Glen Mar.
See you in church this Sunday!
Pastor Mandy
