Pastors Ponderings – Wanted: Follower of Jesus

Pastor's Ponderings

Dear Glen Mar friends,

As Labor Day weekend comes to us, I give thanks for all the ways God gives us the chance to do meaningful work. This Sunday we will pray for workers, and those looking for work, and those “working” on retirement; as well as be fed for the work ahead of us at the Lord’s Table.

If you were writing up a “job description” for a Christian, what would it look like? Love God and love neighbor? Do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with God? Follow Jesus? What does that entail?

Paul writes several possibilities for a “Christian job description,” but one of my favorites is from Romans 12 (Really the whole chapter).

“Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; 10 love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. 11 Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers…Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18 If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all… 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” [Romans 12:9-18, 21]

Join us in worship on Sunday as we consider again what is “all in a day’s work” for a follower of Jesus.

See you in Church,

Pastor Mandy

PS I wanted to share that Bonnie Smith’s husband John passed last Saturday morning. Please join me in praying for Bonnie and her family. We will have a memorial service at Glen Mar on September 30 at 11 a.m. to celebrate John’s life, one that continues with God forever.
