Bringing Good News

Pastor's Ponderings

Dear Glen Mar,

“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news,” the Apostle Paul quotes the prophet Isaiah after asking, “How can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?” (Romans 10:14-15).

This weekend is both Father’s Day and Juneteenth (a brand new federal holiday). I never learned about Juneteenth in school, but it is also known in some quarters as Emancipation Day. President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation passed in 1863, but without enforcement, it had little “teeth” in the South, and the “word” had not reached Texas, or folks were not particularly inclined to enforce it. On June 19, 1865, Union General Granger gave the word, along with Union soldiers, that “in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves….”

We are bearers of the Good News of Christ’s freedom, justice, liberation and hope wherever we are sent. Paul’s chain of Good news starts with being sent—dispatched into the world, to a place, to a people. People are sent, they share God’s Good News, it is heard and then, there is liberation and rejoicing. Who and what are in need of liberation and freedom today? Who needs to be sent? Who needs to speak? Who needs to listen?

This week, many Glen Martians are being sent into their local communities and beyond for Local Mission Week. They are sent to share and to listen, and to experience the joy of serving and building bridges with neighbors. I think they will both share the love of Jesus and meet Jesus there too.

Join us in worship this Father’s Day weekend—for lessons in running a good race for Christ, and a baptism, and praise and prayer. You won’t want to miss it!

See you in Church,
Pastor Mandy

PS Did you sign up to join us at the O’s game on Wednesday? We bought your tickets for you and will be emailing them to you…to pay for them, it’s $15/person by check payable to Glen Mar (or other form of money).
