Dear Glen Mar friends,
This Sunday we will look at the story of Mary and Martha as part of our Greatest Hits series, and the song will be a classic: “Stop in the Name of Love” by the Supremes. (Check it out before worship on Youtube or other music platform). We’ll explore ways to avoid being “distracted by many things” in our lives and how to focus on Jesus in the ways he is present and in the ways he’s calling us to live as his followers.
Some prayer tools you might find helpful to block out distractions for your private devotion include a “Breath Prayer” and the “Prayer of Examen.”
“Breath Prayer” is easy and centering—begin with inhaling and as you do, give your name for God, and exhale asking for what you need. Do this slowly and repeatedly. You will feel the distractions fall away. (For example, your Breath Prayer might be “Lord Jesus, give me peace.” Or “Holy Spirit, calm your child).
The “Prayer of Examen” is an ancient prayer practice that is designed for the end of the day, to show us where God has been present and to give the day as an offering to God. Begin by offering thanksgiving for things we are grateful for in the day just past, and inviting God to show you what God needs you to see about that day. ( I am about to review my day; I ask for the light to know God and to know myself as God sees me). Then prayerfully review the day just past: Where did I know joy today? Where was I challenged or troubled? Where did I pause to be present today? Where did I feel God’s presence? Then, pray about what response God is calling you to make and look ahead to God’s will for you for the next day.
Mark your calendars for our churchwide lunch celebration following the 11 am service on 7/31 to celebrate Margaret and Sean’s ministry with us. It’s Margaret’s last Sunday on July 31, so come out for food and fun! We’ll have Greek on the Street food truck so please come hungry, and leave happy, as we support this great local business!
See you in Church,
Pastor Mandy Sayers
