Spaghetti Dinner – More Than Hit the Mark!

On Sunday, April 7, the Glen Mar youth ministry sponsored a church-wide Spaghetti Dinner as a fund-raiser and Glen Mar showed up! The youth are planning to sponsor a bed build with the Howard County branch of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. This non-profit organization seeks to empower individual and corporate volunteers with the opportunity to build beds for children who do not have a bed of their own. Their motto is, “No kid sleeps on the floor in my town!” The youth group is scheduled to build ten beds on May 26, at an approximate cost of $2,500. The Spaghetti Dinner was organized as a free will offering event, and Glen Mar members showed their support loud and clear. With Glen Mar’s own celebrity chef George Dohner creating the menu and overseeing the kitchen, numerous youth group members and parents assisted in the set up, cooking, serving and clean up at the event. In the end, George’s delicious cooking and Glen Mar’s fantastic support of great causes allowed 190 people to enjoy a wonderful evening of food and fellowship. The event surpassed the financial goal by raising just over $3,300.

Active Summer Fun Planned for Youth

We’re just weeks away from the end of the school year, but youth opportunities to Praise, Grow, and Serve never end. The youth ministry at Glen Mar has an active and fun slate of activities planned for 6th-12th grade youth this summer.

  • Youth Mission Trip: We are once again taking a week-long youth mission trip to Plymouth, NC, the week of June 23-29, working with Carolina Rebuilding Ministry.
  • Vacation Bible School: Another week-long activity for youth will be the chance to participate in Vacation Bible School July 8-12 from 9am – 12noon. Current 6th graders can be part of the VBX program, while youth who are currently in at least 7th grade can volunteer to help.
  • Spoke Folk: Glen Mar is hosting an evening performance by Spoke Folk on June 28 at 6:30pm. This will include a high energy show featuring music, skits, testimonies and puppetry, perfect for the whole family. The evening will also include an ice cream social.
  • Dinner & a Movie Series: A welcome return of an old favorite this summer, the Dinner & a Movie series for high school youth will be on Tuesday nights from 6:30-10pm. We will meet in people’s homes to have dinner and then watch and discuss a recent movie. Our first event on June 18 is just for current high schoolers, then starting in July, the Dinner & a Movie nights will be open for current 8th graders to attend as well. We are looking for families willing to host one of these nights. We ask that you provide dinner and access to a TV. Youth will bring $5 each to help cover the dinner cost. Contact D.C. Veale if you are willing to host a night.
  • Flip Flop Nights: A new activity we’re introducing this year will be Flip Flop Summer Fun nights on Wednesdays from 6:30-8pm. Starting June 18 we will be hosting Flip Flop nights at the church. One week the focus will be on creative arts (paint night, soap making, pottery, karaoke) and the next the focus will be on games (kickball, frisbee golf, wacky ball, Smash Brothers). Some nights might have a minimal cost, most will be free.
  • Trip to Six Flags America: A day at Six Flags America will take place on July 24.
  • Pool Party (or two): We will also have a pool party or two for youth at dates TBD. Rising 6th graders will be welcome to start attending youth activities beginning in August.

Year Round Service Opportunities

Glen Mar is known for the fantastic way in which we support our large, once a year outreach projects. Whether it’s the Day of Service, the Cold Weather Shelter, the summer Mission Trip, Jewels for Hope, or Wish Upon a Star, we do an amazing job of stepping up to serve and/or donate. While we are blessed to be a blessing in large ways, we also engage in a variety of ongoing ministries that provide opportunities to serve every month. Summer time offers warmer weather and a slower pace to life, that just might allow folks to try out a new ministry opportunity.
