The Messenger 2022-05-01, Youth Sunday

By Jen Rowell, Minister for Middle School Youth

In December and January, a small group of middle and high school youth met to plan and lead worship for Youth Sunday, which was on February 6. Youth Sunday this year was part of the “God, Gifts, You” sermon series on Spiritual Gifts. The topic for February 6 was the role of love in spiritual gifts and the well-known scripture 1 Corinthians 13. The group spent some time digging into love with games such as competing to make the best statements about love using Conversation Hearts. They also did a fun activity that they shared with the congregation using their phones’ predictive text technology to complete the statement “Love is…”.

The team included Ian Greenhorn and Aria Lunt, who wrote and delivered the sermon. Ian and Aria have been friends for years and have great chemistry on stage together, which they’ve used to lead Vacation Bible School programs (they also help lead the Children’s Choir). They decided to build on the talk show motif from last summer’s VBS with a TV morning show themed sermon – “Good Morning Glen Mar.” The show started with a pre-recorded special report from “Ellie on the Street” in which Ellie Metakes surprised the pastors with high-speed questions about love in the Bible. Then, with their typical back-and-forth banter, Ian and Aria shared a message on how our primary role, over everything else we do for God, is to love one another.

In addition to Ian and Aria, the Youth Sunday team included Joseph Hampshire, Jeeva and Richi Kumar, and Leah and Molly Sellers. The team worked together to write and select prayers, choose music, and design the flow and theme of the worship. Additional youth provided music, led various parts of the services, and served as ushers and greeters. The result was a powerful message on love and unity.
